Habitat Cabarrus applauds the tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm that youth have, and we appreciate the dedication that our local youth give to us through volunteering, fundraising and advocacy. We are fortunate to have established relationships with youth organizations and schools throughout the county.
In 2007, campus chapters of Habitat for Humanity were started at Northwest Cabarrus High School and Cannon School. These student affiliate members organize fundraisers, promote advocacy and volunteer yearlong on various Habitat projects. During the past years, Habitat Cabarrus has built 5 Youth United homes, primarily organized, built and funded by area youth volunteers. Started in 2007, one of the largest fundraisers for Youth United builds is Shack-A-Thon, held each fall. Over the past three years, Shack-A-Thon has raised more than $14,000 toward affordable housing in Cabarrus County.
Habitat Cabarrus is particularly proud of Youth United’s accomplishments in youth advocacy. Together, students have shared their work and the need for affordable housing with numerous local, state, and federal representatives over the past three years and continue to make strides with elected officials through various advocacy events. Habitat Cabarrus Youth United were recognized in 2009 and 2010 with the Habitat for Humanity International Build Louder Award, for significant accomplishments in youth advocacy efforts, and were visited by Habitat International’s Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Government Relations, Mrs. Liz Blake, at their 2010 Youth Advocacy Day.
Due to safety guidelines, youth younger than 16 are not allowed on the worksite, but we believe it's never too early for children to begin volunteering. With this in mind, we also have opportunities for younger children to volunteer at Habitat Cabarrus by making welcome baskets for the new homeowner families, providing lunch for construction volunteers, building birdhouses for Habitat homes or sponsoring a tool drive to collect tools.
